Raksha Bandhan is the day of love and protection. Celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Shravan according to the Hindu Lunar calendar, this day is mainly celebrated between siblings to bestow their love and affection for each other. Sisters tie Rakhi to her brother and pray to god for his well being, and the brother pledges to protect her from the evil. People also tie rakhi to their friends and other close ones to spread love and care to them.

There are many famous stories in the Indian history that mention about this festival, each with a similar morals but different contexts. Some renowned stories are:

  • Krishna and Draupadi
  • Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun
  • Yama and the Yamuna
  • The Birth of Santoshi Maa
  • Roxana and King Porus
  • Goddess Laxmi and King Bali

Just as Hinduism has different stories in the Puranas about celebrating the festival of Raksha Bandhan, there is a distinct belief in Celebrating the Raksha Bandhan in Jainism. Regarded as the feast of defence bondage, the narrative is based on the protection of 700 munis by a muni. This story itself is the basis of the festival of Rakhi.
