what is wax Fabric

"Wax Fabric" doesn't mean that the fabric is full of wax. The name is derived from the historic methods in which the fabric was dyed. The prints were originally an Indonesian art form "batik", so wax was used as a resist between colors. The designs are printed onto the cloth using melted wax before dye is applied to add usually 2 or 3 colours. The crackling effect displayed on the cloth is caused by the wax-resist dyeing technique and special machinery. The wax was removed later before the final product was sold.

West African soldiers, who were serving in Indonesia in the 1800’s, started to import the fabrics into Africa. Later, European traders replicated the fabrics using modern machinery, particularly the Dutch who are one of the main producers of the fabrics today.

Inspired by Africa, made with a technique derived from Indonesian Batik, presently the majority of the authentic fabric gets designed in the Netherlands.

Today, wax is rarely used as a resist. Wax prints that you find now are almost all roller printed but the results of the printing are the same - a dye that passes through the fabric so that the fabric is virtually reversible (same on both sides).

These are still made in Holland by two main companies and true wax prints are the are very premium and expensive .

Wax prints are a type of nonverbal communication among African women, and thereby carry their messages out into the world. Some wax prints are named after personalities, cities, buildings, sayings, or occasions. The producer, name of the product, and registration number of the design is printed on the selvage, thus protecting the design and attesting to the quality of the fabric. Wax fabrics constitute capital goods for African women, and are therefore often retained based on their perceived market value.
